Analemma Tower: World’s New Tallest Skyscraper Will Hang From Orbiting Astroid

Extreme design by renowned Clouds Architecture Office features a super long skyscraper hanging from an orbiting asteroid.

Radical architectural design group, Clouds AO has a new idea for world’s next tallest skyscraper, and it involves leaving the stratosphere. “Harnessing the power of planetary design thinking, [Analemma Tower] taps into the desire for extreme height, seclusion, and constant mobility.”

The plan is to place a large asteroid 50,000 km above sea level (commercial planes usually fly at about 12km) in Earth’s atmosphere, and suspend a giant building from it with a “high strength cable”. The structure uses the Universal Orbital Support System (UOSS), an inversion of the traditional earth-supported system.

According to the proposal, “Analemma can be placed in an eccentric geosynchronous orbit which would allow it to travel between the northern and southern hemispheres on a daily loop”. The slowest part of the 24-hour orbital cycle will occur over New York City.

The designers insist that employing an asteroid in this manner is not unrealistic, and are hoping to acquire an asteroid from NASA’s scheduled asteroid retrieval mission in 2021. The building is proposed to be built in Dubai, where proven specialists in tall building construction work for one-fifth the cost of contractors in New York City. Using the asteroid system, the building can be transported to anywhere in the world.

Power for Analemma Tower will be sourced from space-based solar panels, installed above primary layers of the atmosphere where they will be constantly exposed to sunlight. Water will be filtered and recycled in a semi-closed loop system with continual replenishment using condensation from clouds and rainwater.

Plans for the massive building include a funerary and worship rooms at the top, with spaces for monuments and relics. The architects explain why most of this vast space is not intended for extended human use: “While researching atmospheric conditions for this project, we realized that there is probably a tangible height limit beyond which people would not tolerate living due to the extreme conditions”.

Following, the lower section will have residential quarters and working offices. The portion closest to Earth will feature a transfer station with dining, shopping, and entertainment. The high cost of its construction is justified, given that sales price per square foot increase by floor— the designers predict Analemma Tower will “command record prices”. It is unclear whether the plan has financial backing yet.

Masterminds and founders of Clouds Architecture Office, Masayuki Sono and Ostap Rudakevych (lead designer of Analemma Tower) have various extreme projects in the works, including the Mars Ice Home, designed along with NASA’s Langley Research Center. Sono originally gained international acclaim for winning a design competition in 2005 for a September 11 Memorial in Staten Island, NY.
